When a child finds communication difficult, it can be hard to know where to start. Parents often want to help but aren't always sure how, what to say, what to model or what really makes a difference. These books were created with that exact uncertainty in mind.
At their heart, the speech sound and concept books are about supporting understanding, confidence and connection, for both children and the adults who care for them.
Supporting Speech Sounds with clarity and confidence
The speech sound books are designed to make speech development clearer and more accessible for parents. Each book includes pictures of a person shaping their mouth to produce a specific sound. Along side is a simple explanation of how that sound is made.
This support is intentional. Seeing how a mouth moves, where the lips, tongue and teeth are placed, helps adults understand what the child is working towards. It also allows parents to model sounds more accurately and confidently, without needing specialist training or technical language.
The hand signals used to support sound recognition are called Cued Articulation. Each hand cue represents how and where a sound is formed in the mouth, helping children clearly understand the physical process of speech production. The system is grounded in linguistic theory, making the cues logical and consistent. Cued Articulation was developed by Jane Passy, who has kindly granted me permission to incorporate the hand signals into my books.
The goal then, is not perfection or pressure, but supportive guidance, helping parents feel informed and children feel encouraged as they explore speech at their own pace.
Making Language Concepts Understandable for Young Children
The concept books focus on helping children understand key language concepts in ways that are meaningful and age appropriate. Each target concept is clearly explained, with language carefully chosen for children around 4-6 years old.
Rather than assuming understanding, these books take the time to explain what a concept means and how it shows up in everyday life. This supports comprehension, not just vocabulary and helps children make sense of the world around them.
Creating Opportunities for Conversation and Connection
Across both the speech sound and concept books, a combination of illustrations and photographs of everyday experiences is used. These familiar images, objects, situations and moments children recognise, are there to spark discussion, curiosity and shared attention.
They offer natural opportunities to pause, talk, ask questions and follow a child's interests. Communication is treated as a shared experience, not a task to be completed.
Because Children Have a Right to be Heard
Underlying all of these books is a simple belief. Children have a right to be heard, in whatever way they communicate. These books are not about changing who a child is, but about supporting understanding, access and meaningful interaction.
They are written to empower parents and educators with clarity and reassurance and to support children in feeling seen, understood and valued.
This blog and these books are the beginning of a conversation. One rooted in respect, inclusion and the belief that every child's voice matters.
